A new project has been announced to commemorate the lives of Indigenous women lost along the Highway of Tears.
In honour of the National Day of Awareness for Missing and Murdered Indigenous Women and Girls, a gathering was held to announce the project today.
Dubbed the Pillars of Hope and Strength, the project was introduced by the Governing Body of the Highway of Tears in Prince George today.
Led by Carrier Sekani Family Services, with support from Indigenous Services Canada, the project will see two unique pillars installed along Highway 16.
Each pillar will be carved by local Indigenous artists out of red cedar, under the direction of renowned Haida carver Keith Kerrigan.
Expected to be raised in the fall, the Pillar of Hope will find a home in Prince George, while the Pillar of Strength will go to the other end of the Highway, in Prince Rupert.
