A new housing program being undertaken by the Nuxalk Nation is putting the design and construction of homes back in the hands of community members.
In the past, homes were designed by those outside the community, and did not meet the needs of the Central Coast climate.
But, the Nation’s new housing program will see four new, 388 square foot, homes on their reserve built and designed by those who live in the community.
Built by apprentices from a Nuxalk-run carpentry program, the housing program will see students learn from skilled workers while improving their community.
Through the program, the Nation is also constructing a new fisheries office, education building, chief’s building, and restaurant in the Bella Coola area.
Featuring a longhouse design, and a traditional First Nations menu, the restaurant is largely funded by Coast Funds, and plans to open this spring.
