New Hazelton RCMP have put together survival kits to help keep mushroom pickers in the area safe.
Mushroom season can often turn tragic for those unprepared to face the shifting weather and varying terrain of BC’s forests.
Because of this, the RCMP and Search and Rescue teams traditionally receive several missing persons calls per week relating to mushroom pickers.
To help stem this, they have created kits containing a fire starter, whistle, water purifying tablets, a double sided survival blanket to increase heat retention and visibility, and two meals.
Kits were packed in to backpacks, which can double as mushroom packs, and distributed to the 7 villages around New Hazelton.
As a result of similar efforts, introduced by Corporal David Goodyear, missing persons calls dropped to just one over an entire season.
