A further $199,000 has been allocated to City of Terrace’s Lakelse Gateway Connection project, to allow for rockfall mitigation.
That project would see an asphalt pathway laid to replace the gravel pathway along Lakelse Avenue between the Old Skeena Bridge and Apsley Street.
Last week, the City awarded the construction contract for the project to Bear Creek Contracting.
Their work will be covered under the $921,000 in provincial grant funding for the project, but rockfall mitigation measures are not.
A plan to mitigate the damage of falling rocks from the cliffside adjacent to the pathway was also developed during the design phase.
It would see a combination of rock removal and the installation of a steel wire mesh drapery to hold back debris, at a price tag of $199,000.
A start date for the project hinges on Ministry of Transportation closures related to the Old Skeena Bridge Rehabilitation Project.
To date, the City says they have not received an update on that project’s timeline from the Ministry.
