With funds from Budget 2022, the province of BC is going to be investing $164 million into building 12 complex care housing spaces in Bella Coola.
Those spaces will help Indigenous residents of Bella Coola dealing with substance-use and mental health challenges that could render them homeless.
Led by the Nuxalk Nation, in partnership with Vancouver Coastal Health and the province, the project will feature comprehensive support services from traditional wellness workers, healers, Elders, knowledge holders, and land-based healing programs.
But, it will also offer other supports, depending on individual need, including: mental-health workers, overdose prevention services, medication management, peer supports, and more.
Currently, the partners are working to identify appropriate locations, with the new spaces expected to open in late 2022.
