BC has taken a step towards decriminalizing small-scale personal-use drug possession, after receiving an exemption from Ottawa.
Under the exemption, adults who possess 2.5 grams or less of certain illegal substances for personal use will no longer face criminal penalties.
In place for exactly 3 years beginning on January 31st, 2023, the exemption will cover most opioids, cocaine, methamphetamine, and MDMA.
While the substances are still considered illegal, police will no longer be seizing the drugs, nor charging or arresting those found in possession.
Instead, police will provide information on available health and social supports and will offer referrals when requested.
