Skeena-Bulkley Valley MP Taylor Bachrach sees a newly released report as the first step in holding the government accountable for rail safety.
That report brought forward 33 recommendations following months of hearings between impacted communities and the House Transportation Committee.
Bachrach says that government needs to start taking the impacts on communities that rail lines run through more seriously.
He says that testimonials heard from Northwest communities of all shapes and sizes are featured heavily in the report.
According to Bachrach, the government’s hands-off approach has put communities at risk, particularly smaller ones by leaving them to deal with the fallout of rail incidents.
With rail transport falling under federal jurisdiction, Bachrach says it’s on Ottawa to ensure the concerns of smaller communities are heard, and to hold rail companies accountable.
