After months of both political and public backlash, the province has decided to cancel their $789 million plan to rebuild the Royal BC Museum.
Premier John Horgan announced the cancellation of the project today, after it became mired in a political struggle between his NDP, and the opposition Liberals.
But, it wasn’t just politicians criticizing the project, as the public quickly tagged it as out-of-touch, and a waste of funds as the province deals with larger issues.
Despite that, Horgan says he still believes the project to be the right call, but regrets the lack of public involvement in the process, and says all blame for that should fall on his shoulders.
Now, the Museum’s Board will begin a fresh public engagement process to allow residents to give their input on a new plan for the museum’s future.
During that time, the museum will remain open to the public, and the construction of the new Collections and Research Building.
Once completed, that building will house important archives and historical artifacts currently held in the museum.
