After month’s of uncertainty surrounding the project’s start date, a contractor has finally been selected for the Old Skeena Bridge Rehabilitation Project.
Construction on the bridge was initially planned to begin in April, but the province was unable to lock down a contractor in time.
But, they have finally selected Gitga’at Park Derochie Industrial Services to undertake the project, with a $22.6 million bid.
Rehabilitation work on the 97 year-old bridge is now expected to begin sometime next month, and in the Fall of 2023.
Public traffic over the bridge will be closed-off while construction is underway, but is expected to temporarily reopen during the winter shutdown.
Scaffolding will be set up underneath the bridge to protect the river during construction, though fishing access will remain open, as will boat access with some posted restrictions.
Work being conducted on the bridge includes: structural repairs, bearing replacements, sidewalk upgrades, and a fresh repainting.
