British Columbia has released their third annual report in to the on-going implementation of the Declaration Act.
Passed in 2019, the Declaration Act seeks to align the province’s laws with the United Nations Declaration on the Rights of Indigenous Peoples.
Part of that legislation requires them to release annual reports on the progress being made and related initiatives underway.
This year, the province established or amended six pieces of legislation, relating to education, adoption, human rights, child and family services, forestry, and accessibility.
They also established a Declaration Act Secretariat, dedicated to to supporting the Act’s implementation, and developed the first Action Plan to advance reconciliation.
In the report, they highlight 19 initiatives currently underway, including: the Tahltan Declaration Act Consent Agreement, Lake Babine Nation Collaborative Agreement, municipal re-naming project, and more.
