Four more land defenders are being charged with criminal contempt, following a BC Supreme Court ruling from yesterday.
In total, 19 of the 27 arrested last November while opposing the Coastal GasLink pipeline are now facing criminal charges.
Last month, the Crown announced their intent to pursue charges against 15 for violating an injunction order covering the worksite.
But, they requested more time to determine whether or not to charge 10 more, while deciding not to pursue charges against 2.
Now, the Prosecution services has decided not to charge an additional 6 as they say RCMP failed to adequately read them the terms of the injunction.
But, they say the four others, all leaders of the pipeline opposition, should have been sufficiently aware of the terms beforehand.
Among those four is Gidimt’en Checkpoint Spokesperson, Sleydo’, or Molly Wickham, who says the ruling won’t deter them from upholding their laws and protecting their land.
You can listen to her full statement at this link.
CGL has until the end of the month to determine whether or not to pursue civil contempt charges against all 27.
