A newly signed Memorandum of Understanding will advance treaty negotiations for a North Vancouver Island-based Nation into the final stage.
Signed between BC, Canada, and the Gwa’sala-‘Nakwaxda’xw Nation, the agreement brings the trio into Stage 5 treaty talks.
Their negotiations will establish a new approach, guided by the Recognition and Reconciliation Rights Policy, developed in 2019.
Through that approach, parties will ensure negotiations align with UNDRIP and BC’s Declaration Act, and allow for the recognition and continuation of rights, without modification or surrender.
That agreement was signed as representatives from Ottawa came to town for a ground breaking ceremony on the Nation’s new Bighouse.
Historically, the Bighouse served as the Nation’s seat of government and as a site for community gathering and ceremonies.
Funding of just under $9 million toward the project is being provided by the Government of Canada.
