Ksan Society has released the results of this year’s annual homeless count for the City of Terrace.
This year’s count found 84 individuals living in homelessness within City limits at the time it was conducted on April 11th.
That’s 10 more than were counted last year, and 7 more than the average year since the counts began in 2014.
From this year’s total, 30 were considered sheltered, while 54 were considered unsheltered, and 64 opted to respond to a more detailed survey.
Of those, 79 percent identified as Indigenous, 63 percent were men, and the median age was 41.6.
59 percent of respondents say they have lived in Terrace for at least one year, while 32 respondents say they are from other communities in the northwest.
Addictions and mental health issues were the top issues cited by respondents, while substance use was the leading cause of housing loss.
Ksan Society says numbers may seem lower than expected, possibly due to homeless individuals being pushed out to Thornhill and other surrounding areas.
They hope to expand to these areas for future counts.
