An effort to restore the ancestral name of a community on Haida Gwaii has now received official provincial recognition.
In May, Councillors of the former Village of Queen Charlotte unanimously voted to restore its traditional Haida name of Daajing Giids Llnagaay.
That decision came following a survey which saw 380 community members respond, with 60 percent either supporting or strongly supporting the change.
Now, a provincial Order in Council has now officially cemented the change, making Daajing Giids the first municipality in BC to have its ancestral name officially restored.
