Changes to the governance structure of Coast Funds will put more control in the hands of the First Nations they support.
Working with 27 Nations from the Great Bear Rainforest and Haida Gwaii, Coast Funds is one of BC’s premier Indigenous-led conservation finance organizations.
Under the changes, the six private funders that contributed to the fund will consolidate in to one, under the Nature United name.
In addition, those six funders, which previously held two of the voting slots to appoint members of their board, have given up their voting rights.
Coast Funds CEO Eddy Adra says that in doing so, they have given First Nations and Crown Governments equal say in where their money goes.
Under the new system, the power to vote for their Board of Directors will fall to two members of their four First Nations Alliances, and two Crown Government reps.
Coast funds says the new governance model is a step towards decolonizing philanthropy in the region.
