British Columbians will be feeling the heat for a few more days, with Environment Canada maintaining extreme heat warnings across most of the province.
Inland sections of the North Coast and Central Coasts, including Terrace and Kitimat, will see daytime temperatures hit as high as 36 today.
Further inland, temperatures are expected to hover around the low to mid-30s across most of BC, with only Prince Rupert, Haida Gwaii, and the far reaches of the Northwest avoiding heat warnings.
With temperatures this high, the risk of heat-related illnesses increase, especially for the elderly, children, pregnant women, and those with chronic illnesses.
Residents are advised to drink plenty of water, avoid alcohol and strenuous activities, and prepare heat plans complete with a list of cooling spots.
Cooling Options:
With temperatures hitting extremes over the next few days, residents should seek out ways to cool down as part of their heat plans.
That includes both in the home and out, with many communities offering cooling options to residents.
In Kitimat, the District is putting on pop-up sprinkler events in both the Riverlodge and Nechako Centre parking lots.
Those looking to cool down can head to either location between 3:00 and 5:00 in the afternoon today and tomorrow, with free public transit on both days.
Smithers Fire Rescue will be holding a hot weather splash event between 2 and 4 PM today which be located at Heritage park and see the firefighters blasting their hoses to help residents cool off.
Terrace residents can cool down at the library, or the Kermode Friendship Centre.
Youth between the ages of 12 and 24 can head to the Foundry to cool down, and Grandparents can do so at the Terrace Women’s Resource Centre between 1:00 and 3:00 this afternoon.
Volunteer Terrace will also be reaching out to seniors and connecting them with cooling options when needed.
If you are aware of a senior which could benefit from the checks, contact Volunteer Terrace at 250 638 1330.
Residents are advised to check with their communities to find all available cooling options.
