A meeting is being held by the BC Assembly of First Nations to discuss long-term reform to the First Nations Child and Family Services Program.
In December, Ottawa came to an agreement in principle to compensate Indigenous children who suffered under the discriminatory on-reserve welfare system.
Last month, they announced the final settlement agreement to compensate children removed from their homes under the First Nations Child and Family Services Program between 1991 and 2022.
But part of the agreement also seeks to reform that program to properly support First Nations families moving forward.
On August 16th, the BCAFN is holding both virtual and in-person meetings to gather feedback to inform discussions related to those reforms.
They are asking for Chiefs, leaders, and those with expertise or experience to attend the meeting between 9:00 and 3:00 in the afternoon.
Limited travel expenses may be covered for Nations looking to send up to 2 delegates, though a location has not yet been decided.
