For the second time in three months, the City of Terrace has asked staff to look into suitable locations for a designated encampment for those experiencing homelessness.
In June, amid an increase in complaints regarding temporary encampments from both camp residents and neighbours, Council was presented with options to better address the issue.
One of those options involved looking into designating a space for campers to stay overnight, and pack up their camps each morning.
But City staff says that since then, complaint levels have dropped, making their current case-by-case method of dealing with camps manageable for now.
Currently, camps on municipal lands are not allowed, and those which present safety risks or draw negative attention are encouraged to pack up and move daily.
Staff does recognize that this isn’t a solution, and say they are continuing to look into the option of a designated location.
Council requested staff come back with a report on recommended locations by the end of the year.
