Construction has begun on a new facility in Kitimat aimed at providing safe housing for women and children fleeing violence.
That project will bring a new four-storey facility to 461 Quatsino Boulevard, featuring 44 purpose-built affordable housing units.
Of those, 12 will be transition beds, another 12 will be second-stage housing units, and 20 will be permanent affordable housing units.
Transition and second stage housing will provide short-term accommodation, complete with supports, for women, transgender women, and non-binary and two-spirit people fleeing violence.
It will then provide a smooth transition to the affordable townhomes, which, along with the second-stage units, will have rent locked in at 30 percent of the resident’s income.
Transition beds will be free to rent, with safety planning, crisis intervention, and parenting supports available on-site.
Operated by the Tamatik Status of Women Association, the facility is funded through a partnership between them and all three levels of government.
