Plans to move the Ksan Society’s Turning Points shelter to a new location will be going ahead, after receiving support from Terrace City Council.
According to Ksan Society, the current facility on Lakelse Avenue was designed to support 20 beds, with related services available.
But, since going into operation in 2016, demand has increased significantly, and the site now sees an average of 40 people a day, with a single-day peak of 85.
In order to meet demand, Ksan purchased the old Elks Hall building on Tetrault Street, which they will now seek to renovated.
Proposed renovations include: new windows, doors and siding, privacy fencing, new washrooms, showers and laundry amenities, and a space for residents to set up overnight tents in the courtyard.
With the support of the City, they will now apply for grant funding of up to $500,000 from the Northern Development Initiative Trust.
