A petition calling for the government to take action to address the crisis around missing and murdered Indigenous people is headed to the House of Commons.
In 2019, the Final Report into Missing and Murdered Indigenous Women and Girls declared the crisis a genocide, calling for immediate changes to stem the tragedy.
But, so far, the government’s response has lacked urgency, leading to the petition brought forward by Vancouver MP Jenny Kwan.
That petition makes six requests of government, which include fulfilling the Final Report’s calls for justice from government, and its calls for policing services.
In addition, the petition calls for a more immediate response to missing Indigenous people reports, an action plan with media to increase coverage, expanding community-based security models with Indigenous perspectives, and more.
So far, the petition has gathered more than 800 signatures, and is open to collect more until November 10th.
