A new Indigenous housing project in Smithers is set to go ahead, with Council approving a number of proposed variances.
That project is being undertaken by the Dze L K’ant Housing Society, and looks to bring 30 units of affordable housing to the community.
Located at the former Highway Operations Yard at 1611 Main Street, the project will require revitalization to remove its contaminated status before the development can go through.
Council approved a request to remediate the site, at a $650,000 price tag, funded through Northern Capital and Planning Grant funds.
They also approved variance permits to reduce the number of parking spots to 33, allow $30,000 in off-site service incentives, and to waive the ornamental street light requirement.
In total, the project, listed as an Indigenous residential development, comes at an estimated $13 million price tag.
