Earlier today, the Survivor’s flag was raised on the Federal Government’s Parliament Hill in order to honor every Indigenous Person that was taken from their family and forced into attending Residential School.
As the ceremony where the flag was raised took place, Residential School survivors from across Canada attended in person along with several politicians such as Crown-Indigenous Relations Minister Marc Miller, executive director of the National Centre for Truth and Reconciliation Stephanie Scott and Prime Minister Justin Trudeau.
The flag’s design was created with consultation from the survivors and every part of it was approved by the group that was consulted.
Its design shows a family on top of seeds that are intended to represent all the children that never made it back home.
Some of the survivors talked about the flag’s significance and are hoping that every time someone sees the flag, they take a moment to pause and reflect on the work that needs to be done to further reconciliation.
