Numerous ministers, local officials, and Indigenous leaders were on hand as the Village of Daajing Giids became the first community in BC to have its ancestral name officially restored.
Nearly two months later, a Provincial Order in Council passed, officially cementing the name change in the province’s eyes.
But, in keeping with Haida tradition, Mayor Kris Olsen said they waited until August 31st, in order to work with the Haida Nation and honour their protocols.
Members of both provincial and Haida Nation leadership were in the Village that day to usher in the change, and reveal the community’s new sign.
