BC’s Independent Investigations Office is looking into the role police played in the death of a man who had been in their custody.
Police had initially arrested the 34 year-old on September 1st, in connection with a break, enter, and assault in Telkwa.
He was then remanded to appear in court yesterday, but during a cell check from Sunday, police say they found him in medical distress, suffering from self-inflicted wounds.
Officers had the man transported to hospital, where he was later pronounced dead.
Now, the IIO have launched an investigation to determine whether or not police actions played a role in, or could have prevented the death.
Family members have since come forward to say that RCMP had informed them the man was on suicide watch, and they are unsure how the incident could’ve occurred under supervision.
