Over the next couple of months, a series of trials will take place to determine whether Canada is to blame for the harms suffered by First Nations Bands through the residential school system.
326 Bands have joined the Band Reparations Class Action lawsuit, which got underway today with the first of 6 to 8 weeks of trial proceedings.
Those trials will decide whether Canada is legally responsible for the harms suffered, particularly the loss of language and culture.
If the courts rule in favour of the Bands, a process will begin to determine how much in damage compensations each band is owed.
Lead by the Tk’emlúps te Secwépemc and shíshálh Nations, the suit focuses on the collective harm suffered by the Bands as a group, not by individuals.
