Policing reform and the handling of prolific offenders took centre stage for part of the Union of BC Municipalities’ annual convention yesterday.
A number local government officials spoke up during the event to voice their displeasure with the province’s inaction on the issues.
While committees to look into police reform and the handling of prolific offenders were launched in 2020 and earlier this year, little has been done since.
But, the attendees say that immediate action on compulsory police services and mental health funding could go along way toward stemming the issues.
Provincial officials in attendance offered no timeline or specifics, but said they support a number of recommendations coming forward, including giving Indigenous communities direct influence over policing services.
A resolution from Terrace Council to have the province adjust the way they deal with prolific offenders is on the agenda, though it sits in the “No Recommendation” block at the convention.
