Community members from Gitwangak, Gitsegukla, and Gitanyow gathered yesterday to break ground on the new Gitxsan West Secondary School.
Construction on the Gitwangak-based school began on July 25th, after Yellowridge Construction was rewarded the contract to perform the work.
A high school has been on Gitwangak’s radar for the past decade, but it wasn’t until a few years ago when the proposition of a regional school came up.
That led to a discussion among the Chiefs and community members from all three communities, which paved the way for a school to serve them all.
At a roughly $40 million price tag, the school is expected to take in around 200 students in its first year, after construction wraps up in 2024.
