By recently acquiring the Shearwater Resort and Marina, the Heiltsuk Tribal Council has re-taken ownership of a big part of their territory.
And not only has the council taken back an area of their territory, they have subsequently created new opportunities for employment and training for their nation members.
In the span of only about a year, the Heiltsuk Nation has created and launched new eco-cultural tour packages, which is intended to offer the resort’s guests a more authentic experience that includes wildlife viewing, storytelling, and visits to culturally safe archaeological sites in the Nation’s territory.
This resort has been open since the 1960’s and has served as a place for travelers to dock and fuel their boats, while also offering a place to stay overnight as people explore the central coast.
