Despite recent public contention, a plan to move the Ksan Society’s Turning Points shelter to Tetrault Street is set to go ahead.
According to Ksan, the current facility on Lakelse Avenue was never designed to support the increase in demand they’ve seen since it opened.
In order to better meet that demand, they purchased the old Elks Hall building, with the intention of moving homeless shelter services there.
But, many area residents and business owners are not fans of that plan, saying they have concerns over safety and theft in the new location.
They brought forward a petition with 372 signatures during this week’s council meeting, which ultimately led to a protest in opposition of the petition.
Demonstrators say the move is needed to protect the City’s vulnerable population, and ultimately RCMP were called and the meeting was paused.
Now, as the location is adequately zoned, and grants have already been acquired, Ksan will be going ahead with the move, once full funding is secured.
