A day meant to honour reconciliation and healing was stained by the destruction of a student art installation in Terrace this weekend.
Luckily, community members would band together the next day to erase that stain, and build a new piece in the true spirit of collaboration.
Installed along the Howe Creek Trail, the original piece had been crafted by students at Suwilaawks Elementary in honour of Truth and Reconciliation Day.
But, the piece was hit by vandals that very day, a crime the City calls a step backwards on a day to intended for learning from past mistakes.
When they found out about the vandalism, residents rallied to collect new wooden heart panels, paint, and supplies, which will eventually be hung in the same spot.
A booth was set up at the Farmers’ Market the next day, where residents could paint hearts, and write messages of love, healing, and support on the new panels.
Anyone with information on the vandalism is asked to contact RCMP at 250 638 7400.
