No changes to the boundaries of the north’s six provincial ridings were proposed in the BC Electoral Boundary Commission’s preliminary report.
For the first time in nearly a decade, northern districts were at risk of being altered when the Commission began consultations in the Spring.
All but one of the ridings fall well below the population criteria, but the Commission determined increasing their size any more would have a negative impact on representation.
Despite hearing concerns over the difficulties in getting in touch with MLAs over such large ridings, the Commission decided it was best to keep the current borders.
One change is in store though, as the District formerly known as just the Stikine, will now be known as the Bulkley Valley-Stikine.
In total, the report proposes adding 6 new ridings, four in Vancouver, one in Kelowna, and one in Langford, for a total of 93.
