A new community kitchen in Hartley Bay will support traditional cultural values, and strengthen food security for the Gitga’at First Nation.
Neighbouring the community’s greenhouse and gym, the renovated kitchen replaces the previous one, which served the community for decades.
Their new kitchen features a commercial-grade dishwasher, freezer, and two ovens, along with upgraded appliances and fixtures, and an efficient floorplan.
It provides the community with a venue more suitable for transferring traditional knowledge and processing sustainable resources, while helping to improve supply-chain limitations.
In total, the project comes in at a price tage of roughly $126,000, with $79,000 of that coming from the Prince Rupert Port Authority’s Community Investment Fund.
