A new Reconciliation Policy Framework has been developed and adopted by Prince Rupert City Council, to improve relationships with First Nations.
As a living document, the policy is intended to lay the groundwork for a future action plan which will be constantly evolving.
Policies proposed in the framework are broken down into 4 categories: responsibilities under UNDRIP, cultural identity and language, employment equity, and housing and development.
Among them are commitments to visual and cultural Ts’msyen representation, land acknowledgements, a new street naming process, support for economic benefits in neighbouring Nations, and more.
Development of a final plan would be based on recommendations from a committee of Indigenous community representatives.
