A newly introduced contract and incentive program is bringing a slew of new family physicians to BC.
Since the beginning of the month, 54 new doctors have signed contracts under the provinces new-to-practice contract program.
Announced in June, the program looks to incentivize recent family medicine graduates, to help ease the province’s on-going family doctor shortage.
Under the program, physicians will earn $295,000 their first year of practice, along with a $25,000 signing bonus, a $75,000 contribution towards clinic costs, and medical training debt forgiveness.
Since June, a total of 140 physicians have expressed interest in the program, with a further 60 in discussions about clinic placements.
According to data released by the Angus Reid Institute in August, roughly 23 percent of British Columbians do not have a family doctor.
