Governments from BC, the Yukon, and Canada are investing in a new hydro-electric generation project being developed by the Taku River Tlingit First Nation.
Based out of Atlin, the project seeks to replace diesel electricity generation in the Yukon, which will reduce pollution and create local jobs.
In 2009, the Nation-owned Tlingit Homeland Energy Limited Partnership completed their 2.1 megawatt hydro facility, successfully replacing diesel-generated electricity in Atlin.
Now, they are looking to expand that project, by building two hydro power plants at Pine Creek to produce 8 megawatts of energy.
That energy will then be sold to the Yukon via a planned 92 km transmission line, along Atlin Road.
Part of the project will require the installation of a fibre-optic data cable, which will also provide high-speed internet to Atlin for the first time.
In total, BC is investing $20 million in the expansion project.
