New advice is being given to the Provincial Government via the Declaration Act Secretariat, whose goal is to advance Indigenous rights.
This guidance is intended to provide the best possible practices for when the government works with Indigenous Peoples on the development of provincial laws and policies.
The Interim Approach to Implement the Requirements of Section 3 of the Declaration on the Rights of Indigenous Peoples Act was released by the Province’s new Indigenous-led Declaration Act Secretariat.
This new approach was the first outcome delivered by the Declaration Act Secretariat and it provides every ministry and sector of government with clear, transparent instructions on how they should work with Indigenous Peoples in developing provincial laws, policies and practices, as required under the Act.
The approach was created as a response to a UN Declaration that emphasized the rights of Indigenous Peoples to influence the outcome of decision-making processes on matters that affect them.
