Close to 20 high ranking officers and police board members from Vancouver went to Bella Bella earlier today to apologize for events that transpired yesterday.
Two officers who arrested Heiltsuk member Maxwell Johnson and his then 12-year-old granddaughter for trying to open a bank account for the girl in 2019, did not show up to was meant to be an apology ceremony for that incident.
As a result of that, Vancouver Police members came to what was meant to be an apology feast in the Heiltsuk Nation community of Bella Bella earlier today, bearing gifts and apologizing for the officers skipping yesterday’s ceremony.
However, Heiltsuk leaders rejected both the gifts and the apology.
Both Johnson and his Granddaughter expressed their disappointment at the officers not showing and said they won’t be able to heal until they get a direct apology from the officers responsible for the arrest.
