A temporary deal has been signed by both the provincial government and the union representing paramedics in BC in order to get more staff in remote communities.
This new agreement will see paramedics who are on call but not dealing with a medical emergency at the moment, get their hourly rate raised from $2 an hour to $12 an hour.
Another change is that paramedics will also get paid double what they used to for overtime or recall shifts on evenings and weekends.
While the union did state that this temporary deal is a step in the right direction, there is still work to be done since it’s not a perfect fix.
The new deal officially went into effect on Saturday and it’s currently meant to be in place until New Year’s Eve or until a more permanent deal is ratified.
