In a recently put out news release, the Prince Rupert Port Authority began talking about how cruise tourism has had a very strong stretch since it’s return.
After it’s two-year pandemic induced hiatus ended, the Port saw a 230 per cent increase in cruise passenger volumes compared to 2019, the last time cruise ships were operating in the country.
In fact, it was considered the biggest cruise season in Prince Rupert over the past decade as between May 17th and October 3rd, 40,998 cruise passengers went through the Port.
This cruise boom has also really helped out the local economy since around $3.5 million in direct consumer money has been spent in the community, including more than $650,000 spent with local shore excursion providers.
One of the big reasons for the boom is because the vessel called the Ruby Princess, which can hold more than 3,000 passengers, had come through Prince Rupert 13 times.
