According to some recent data released by Statistics Canada, some northern Cities in BC have seen upticks in their visible minority population over the past five years.
The most notable of which has probably been Fort St John, whose Filipino population increased from 680 people in 2016 to 1,190 in 2021, a total of 75 percent.
Other changes to the city’s population include people identifying as Latin American growing by 100 per cent, South Asian by 82 per cent, Korean by 67 per cent, Black by 11.5 per cent and Southeast Asian by 10 per cent.
In total, about 13 percent of the current Fort St John population identifies as a visible minority and among BC’s northern and Interior regions, Fort St John has the highest percentage of people of color in their population.
