Increased security is on the way for hospitals in Terrace and Prince Rupert, and recent events show it can’t come fast enough.
Last month the province announced that hospitals in both communities were among 26 splitting 320 new in-house protection services officers.
Both Mills Memorial and the Prince Rupert Regional Hospital are set to receive up to 10 officers, though no timeline has been provided.
Just one day after the Ministry’s announcement, RCMP had to be called out to the hospital in Prince Rupert to deal with a man threatening workers.
According to police, the 51 year-old man was arrested and received a psychological evaluation, but was ultimately deemed healthy.
Police found and seized a number of weapons from the man after executing a search warrant, and are forwarding charges related to both incidents.
