Talks between Canada’s Health Minister and provincial ministers over an increase in federal health care funding have reportedly broken down.
Ministers from all jurisdictions gathered in Vancouver yesterday for two days of meetings, which had appeared to be going well in day one.
But, according to a statement issued by Canada’s Premiers today, no progress has been made during the discussions.
For months, provincial and territorial leaders have lobbied Ottawa to increase the federal health transfer contribution from 22 percent to 35 percent.
Just this morning, Federal Health Minister Jean-Yves Duclos said that Ottawa was willing to discuss an increase, but didn’t specify by how much.
Duclos also said that, in order for a funding boost, all jurisdictions must commit to the use of key health care indicators, and building a world class health data sharing system.
