Charges against a Smithers man accused of stabbing his best friend to death in 2020 have been dropped, following a decision from last week.
On February 8th, 2020, RCMP were called on by paramedics to lend assistance after a man had been stabbed in a rural Smithers residence.
There they located 22 year-old Brodie Cumiskey unconscious and suffering from serious injuries, which he would eventually succumb to.
Initial investigations led police to believe an argument between Cumiskey and his friend Michael Egenolf had taken place prior to the stabbing.
Egenolf was arrested, and in March of 2021, the Prosecution Service approved charges of second degree murder.
But last Friday, the Crown decided to stay the charges, stating that the evidence no longer meets the charge assessment standard.
No specifics on what changed have been released.
