A new vessel is joining the Canadian Coast Guard’s fleet in Prince Rupert, following an official dedication ceremony this afternoon.
Classified as a Bay Class vessel, the CCGS McIntyre Bay is a high-endurance, self-righting, Search and Rescue lifeboat, which has been operating in BC since 2019.
Capable of operating 100 nautical miles from shore, the boat will service the waters around Chatham Sound, Dixon Entrance, and the Northern Hecate Strait.
Specifically equipped to respond to marine distress signals and environmental response calls, the vessel will be ready to respond to any call within 30 minutes.
Local business woman Lorie Palmer was selected as the traditional, honourary, civilian sponsor of the boat.
She joined the Coast Guard’s Western Region Assistant Commissioner, Derek Moss, in the ceremonial breaking of a glass bottle on the ship’s bow to officially christen the ship.
