Police have uncovered the remains of an Indigenous woman, murdered over 30 years ago, in a Prince George park.
Last month, Prince George RCMP were notified of the remains after they were discovered by a community member on Connaught Hill.
They have now confirmed the remains to be those of Donna Charlie, a then 22-year old Indigenous woman murdered in 1990.
An initial investigation by RCMP led to first-degree murder charges against Gerald Smaaslet, which resulted in a second-degree murder conviction after trial.
But that decision was appealed and overturned, and in 1995 Smaaslet pleaded guilty to manslaughter in relation to the crime.
Smaaslet, who has since been declared a dangerous offender, served just over 4 years in jail, with two years probation and a lifetime weapons ban.
