A brand new way of approaching provincial forestry agreements is expected to result in quicker action when it comes to harvesting areas damaged by wildfires, providing timber for millsĀ and setting up faster reforestation through the leadership of First Nations.
These new Wildfire Salvage Opportunity Agreements are expected to enable the timely direct awardance of forestry licences to First Nations for salvaging timber damaged by wildfires and also support mills by ensuring they can access fire-damaged logs while they still have commercial value.
A lot of damaged wood has been created by the recent record breaking wildfire seasons, which has made it very hard for timber companies to harvest the areas quickly.
The new agreements will allow First Nations to have a chance to secure salvage timber volumes under licence, adding to the work that forest companies are already performing and they will also allow for meaningful employment and economic benefitsĀ in First Nations communities.
These changes come from a key recommendation from the BC Pulp and Paper Coalition to keep mills operating and support forestry jobs.
