Skeena-Bulkley Valley MP Taylor Bachrach is calling on the federal government to do more to address the recent rise in crime in Northwest BC.
Last week, Bachrach stood in the House to question Justice Minister David Lametti on what he is doing to address the concerns of local and provincial leaders.
Last month, BC Attorney General Murray Rankin met with Lametti to call for reforms to Canada’s bail system.
When asked for an update on those reforms, Lametti said the topic has been handed off to a committee of deputy ministers to look in to.
But, Bachrach says that the forming of a committee doesn’t instill the most hope, and is urging for the Minister to prioritize the issue.
His calls come at the same time as a new set of changes to BC’s response to public offenders at the provincial level.
When those changes were announced, the province cited federal bail law changes as part of the reason for the uptick in repeat offenders.
