A newly introduced set of waterway management guidelines aim to improve safety and reduce user conflicts along the north coast.
Developed between the government of Canada and the Gitga’at and Gitxaala Nations, the guidelines are the result of 3 years of consultations.
They will apply to all vessels navigating the traditional waters of both Nations between Kitimat and Browning Entrance.
Under the new guidelines, separate traffic corridors will be created for deep sea traffic, domestic traffic, and small crafts.
Fishing, harvesting and recreational boats will mostly be able to use the full channel, while deep-sea vessels will be mostly limited to the mid-channel.
Specific rules for certain sections are also laid out, along with the creation of an in-shore safety zone, speed and passing rules, communication guidelines, and more.
