BC MP Taylor Bachrach has gone after the Liberal government to try and get them reform the west coast fisheries.
He was met by applause in the commons when he brought up the issue this week over the ongoing controversy on the monopolization of the provinces fishing industry and foreign ownership.
Bachrach told the house that commercial fishing licences shouldn’t be treated like a private stock market controlled by big international corporations.
The committee of Fisheries and Oceans made recommendations back in 2018 that called for reforms on how commercial licences and quotas are distributed in this province.
Their aim was to address concerns over a monopoly, including limited ownership by foreign investors who have moat likely never boarded a fishing vessel while reaping the profits from afar while the heart of the industry, the commercial fleet, remains tied to the dock due to diminishing stocks.
